The morning-after pill, supplied today in Urmston

If you have had unprotected sex or a contraceptive accident, you can come to Davyhulme Pharmacy on Canterbury Road and see a pharmacist privately. We can supply emergency contraception on the NHS to anyone living in Trafford the same visit, with no charge.

How quickly should I act

Levonorgestrel (Levonelle) is most effective within twenty-four hours of unprotected sex and can be used up to seventy-two hours. Ulipristal acetate (ellaOne) is licensed for up to one hundred and twenty hours but is most effective the sooner you take it. A copper coil fitted within five days is the most reliable option of all and we can refer you to a sexual-health clinic if that is your preference.

What happens in the consultation

A private chat with the pharmacist in the consultation room, lasting about ten minutes. We ask about the date of your last period, any other medication, your weight (it affects which pill is right) and any health conditions. If suitable we supply the medication on the spot.

Confidentiality

Conversations are private. We follow NHS Fraser guidelines for under-sixteens. Nothing is shared with parents or the GP without your consent, unless there is a safeguarding concern.

After the consultation

We explain what to expect, what to do if you are sick within three hours of the dose, and signpost you to longer-term contraception and STI testing. A follow-up pregnancy test three weeks later is recommended.

Who pays

Free on the NHS for patients of any age living in or registered with a GP in Trafford. If you are visiting from another borough we can supply privately for a small fee.

Common questions

Do I need an appointment?

no GP appointment needed for emergency contraception. Walking distance from Urmston Metrolink and most patients are seen within fifteen minutes.

How much does it cost?

Free for patients eligible under the Trafford NHS scheme. Otherwise £15 to £30 depending on which medicine is chosen.

Will my GP find out?

Only if you tell us to send a note. The pharmacist follows confidentiality guidance, including for under-sixteens who meet the Fraser criteria.

Does the pill work if I am overweight?

Levonorgestrel is less effective if you weigh over seventy kilos. The pharmacist may suggest ulipristal acetate or a copper coil referral, whichever is best for your situation.
