NHS Smoking Cessation

Quit smoking with weekly support from your Urmston pharmacist

Most people who try to stop smoking on their own slip back within a month. Patients who pair willpower with NHS pharmacist support are three times more likely to still be smoke-free a year later. We run a twelve-week programme from Davyhulme Pharmacy on Canterbury Road in Urmston, free on the NHS.

What the programme covers

A first appointment of around twenty minutes to set a quit date, talk through your smoking history and choose the right nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) - patches, gum, lozenges, microtab, mouth spray or oral pouches. Then a fifteen-minute review every week for the first six weeks and then fortnightly until week twelve. NRT is supplied on the NHS at each visit.

How NRT works

NRT delivers a clean dose of nicotine without the seven thousand other chemicals in tobacco smoke. It calms cravings while you re-learn your day without cigarettes. We often combine a long-acting patch with a fast-acting gum or spray for stronger cravings.

Vaping

Vaping is not part of the NHS cessation service but the pharmacist can talk you through how it compares to NRT, the safety evidence and how to transition from vape back to nothing once you are stable off cigarettes.

Carbon monoxide testing

We use a small handheld monitor to measure the carbon monoxide on your breath at each visit. Watching the number drop over the first fortnight is one of the most motivating parts of the programme.

Who pays

Free for adults registered with an NHS GP in Trafford or surrounding boroughs. Pregnant women, hospital inpatients and patients with cardiovascular disease are particularly encouraged.

Common questions

How quickly will I feel better?

Carbon monoxide leaves your blood within forty-eight hours. Taste and smell return in a few days. Lung function improves measurably within three months.

What if I slip up?

A single cigarette is not a failure. The pharmacist will help you understand the trigger and tweak the plan rather than judge.

Can I do the programme if I am pregnant?

Yes. We tailor NRT carefully in pregnancy and work closely with the midwife team.
