Role of the 2.4 mg dose
Top of the Wegovy ladder. The STEP-1 trial reported an average 14.9 percent body weight reduction at 2.4 mg over 68 weeks. This is the long-term maintenance dose for most patients who reach the top of the ladder.
How long you stay on 2.4 mg
Open-ended with monthly pharmacist review. A step-down plan is built in once weight goals are reached.
What to expect
- Strong appetite suppression — meals are small and satisfying
- Continued loss in patients who plateaued lower on the ladder, although usually at a slower rate than at 1 mg
- Improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar control and cholesterol often appear alongside weight loss
- Side effects from earlier steps largely gone
Injection technique
Once a week, rotate sites, keep pens refrigerated until first use. After first use the pen can be kept at room temperature up to 30 degrees Celsius and must be discarded within 56 days.
Pharmacist review
Monthly pharmacist review remains in place at 2.4 mg — supervision does not stop because you reach the top dose. We discuss step-down and long-term plans honestly.
When to seek urgent advice
Anyone developing severe upper abdominal pain that goes through to the back, persistent vomiting, yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of a severe allergic reaction must stop Wegovy and contact NHS 111 or 999 straight away.
