What Wegovy does and why it works
Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide at doses licensed for weight management — the same active ingredient as Ozempic, but supplied in the strengths used for chronic weight loss rather than for type 2 diabetes. It is a once-weekly injection licensed in the UK for adults with obesity, or with excess weight alongside a related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia or obstructive sleep apnoea.
Davyhulme Pharmacy on Canterbury Road in Urmston stocks the full ladder of Wegovy strengths from the 0.25 mg starter pen through to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. Patients from Urmston, Davyhulme, Flixton, Stretford and across Trafford collect their pens in person and stay under the care of our superintendent pharmacist Muhammad Adnan throughout.
We charge a flat £100 per month at every dose. Like our Mounjaro service, the price never moves as you titrate up — what you pay on the 0.25 mg starter pen is what you pay on the 2.4 mg maintenance dose.
How semaglutide works
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics the gut hormone GLP-1, which is released after eating. The result is slower stomach emptying, longer-lasting fullness, reduced appetite signals in the brain, and better blood sugar control. Wegovy acts on a single pathway — GLP-1 — which is why the average results in clinical trials are slightly smaller than tirzepatide-based Mounjaro, but semaglutide has the longer real-world safety record of the two.
What the STEP trials showed
In the STEP-1 trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine, adults without diabetes taking 2.4 mg semaglutide lost an average of 14.9 percent of their starting body weight over 68 weeks compared with 2.4 percent on placebo. Real-world results depend on diet, activity and how well a patient tolerates the titration schedule, but the STEP data are the benchmark for what Wegovy can do at maintenance dose.
The Wegovy dose ladder we use in Urmston
Wegovy is started low and increased slowly. The manufacturer's schedule is four weeks at each step before stepping up, and our pharmacist will follow that schedule unless a patient needs to slow down for tolerance reasons.

- Tiredness during the first fortnight after a step
- Burping or reflux
Less common
- Vomiting if doses are pushed up too quickly

Serious — seek urgent advice
Stop the injections and contact a doctor or NHS 111 straight away if you develop severe upper abdominal pain that radiates to the back (possible pancreatitis), persistent vomiting, yellowing of skin or eyes, or symptoms of a severe allergic reaction. Wegovy must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and women of childbearing age should use reliable contraception throughout treatment and for at least two months after stopping.
Most side effects ease within five to seven days of each dose change. Our pharmacist talks you through what to expect at every review.
Who can start Wegovy at Davyhulme Pharmacy
We can supply Wegovy to adults aged 18 and over with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight-related condition. A full pharmacist consultation is completed before the first pen is issued. Wegovy cannot be supplied to anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, or a history of pancreatitis. Safety always sits above the sale of a pen — we will say no if a no is right.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight will I lose on Wegovy?
Average results from STEP-1 were 14.9 percent of starting body weight over 68 weeks on the 2.4 mg maintenance dose, compared with 2.4 percent on placebo. Real-world results depend on diet, activity and titration. Most patients see roughly one pound a week once they reach 1 mg or above.
Can I collect my Wegovy pens from your pharmacy in Urmston?
Yes. Every pen is dispensed in person from our pharmacy at 179-181 Canterbury Road, Urmston M41 0SE. No couriers, no cold-chain shipping worries — straight from our fridge to yours.
Do I need a GP referral to start Wegovy?
No GP appointment needed. Our pharmacist consultation replaces that step. If we feel a GP review would be safer for any reason, we will tell you and pause the supply.
Wegovy or Ozempic — what is the difference?
Both are semaglutide. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 1 mg. Wegovy is licensed for weight management and is supplied in the higher 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg strengths that are not available as Ozempic. We supply Wegovy for weight loss.
What happens if I miss a weekly dose?
If it has been less than 48 hours since the missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. If more than 48 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and inject your next one on your normal day. Never take two doses within 48 hours of each other.
How long do I stay on Wegovy?
There is no fixed end date. Many patients stay on 2.4 mg for many months or years with monthly pharmacist review. A step-down plan is built in when weight goals are reached so you do not regain everything you lost.
Why is the price the same at every dose?
£100 a month covers the pen at any strength from 0.25 mg through to 2.4 mg, plus the consultation and the monthly review. We do not punish patients financially for needing a higher dose.
Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro later?
Yes. Patients in Urmston sometimes start on Wegovy and switch to Mounjaro if results plateau, or move from Mounjaro to Wegovy for budget or tolerance reasons. The switch is planned with the pharmacist with a short washout where needed.
